I made the RSC VP's honor roll!!!

Now, don't go saying you knew it all along, that I'm a smart cookie, etc., etc., etc.

Because this is a BIG FREAKIN' DEAL to me! Because for this former underachieving (according to some) student, it means a lot. I wasn't always the best student who ever graced a campus (anywhere), and it concerned me greatly that I would fall flat on my face academically.

This proves that I didn't.

And, yes, I will post all the certificates I get for making the honor roll.

It's all been worth it: the walking in the snow and ice, the troubles with Babydoll, the late nights I spent losing sleep because I was worried about a test, the lack of sleep in general. And, this laptop was the best investment in my education I could have ever made with the limited funds I had.

I'd like to thank the academy...

Okay, okay... even I know when to stop.

The English Comp project from hell is still in hell...

Our English professor decided that we weren't going to meet today, but the three of us in the group I'm in decided to meet at 11am (when class would normally start), to put our collected stuff together. I showed up and the group leader showed up, but the gal that is responsible for the works cited page for the whole project and the purpose statement was a no-show. I had dragged my laptop all the way down there for nothing! Grrrr....

I don't know what we're going to do if she doesn't show up Monday. I'm going to be stressing about that all weekend. I'll get my stuff together, collect my notes, give a comparative talk equating genocide with extinction, and hope for the best.

It's not nice to fool with Stef the weekend before the English Comp I final. I don't do stress well anymore.

I'm going to take a nice long snooze... right after finals are over

I told someone today that I'm going to take a nap right after finals. I haven't been getting the sleep I need the last couple of weeks, and it's starting to take a toll on me. No more of this staying up til 2am, trying to cram a whole semester's knowledge into my brain. I know the material, so for my first final on Thursday, I'll study in the afternoon tomorrow, like I did today and yesterday, and take it from there.

I'm going up to Mom's tomorrow after school, because another place has called me for an interview, and it's closer to her house than it is mine. The job, as I understand it, is near me though.

So I have a double whammy here... do well on the interview Wednesday and the final on Thursday.

Warning: Rant Ahead--

The whiny kid from one of my broadcasting classes has a class on Tuesday and Thursdays in the same place where I was editing my final project, and again, he was complaining about juggling work with school (and I guess he's not doing a good job at it, because school is apparently suffering). I didn't hear all of his arguments (mostly because I've tuned him out, and because I don't think he has a valid argument), so I don't know what all he said. Nor do I care. He hasn't learned to set priorities-- if he's going to go to school, then he should strive to do well. Blaming his work schedule, or the instructor, or whatever his lame argument is, isn't going to win him any brownie points. The person he should be blaming is the one he looks at in the mirror every morning.

The way I see it is this-- if you're not going to do your best work, for whatever reason, be it work, the instructor, your classmates, or your own failings, I don't want to hear your excuses for why you didn't complete the work. You either do the work or you don't. I may have not had the best editing projects in class, but at least I did them, and got them done on time. This guy was still editing the very first project we had in that class last week. That first project, if memory serves, was due in February! It's May, dude... it's too late for all that. I don't care what kind of fancy ass equipment you've bought to help you, the project is still late. Period. End of Story.

And this ends my rant about that!

The All-Nighter?

Maybe not, but sometime in the next week, I'm going to be one exhausted grrl!

I may need some help in getting some things done, homework-wise. Or else, stuff is going to suffer.

I really need to go to bed, but I'm not tired yet.

I need to go somewhere where I'm not tempted by other things. Maybe I'll make a trip to the Rose State library tomorrow later today.

The essay that is due Monday in English Comp I is done. Still working on the group project stuff. It has to be presented on the 14th. It's something like 50 percent of our grade, and I have an A in there now.

The hurrieder I go, the behinder I get

That's how I'm feeling about the studying, the homework, and the English Comp project from hell...

I need something to calm me down and mellow me out.

I already asked someone for a massage, but the timing is off...

damn.

So in the morning, after I run my errands and stuff, it's back to hittin' the books.

And, the books hit back!

cowboy, take me away. always, cowgal

Bringing up the slack... and I'm not exactly thrilled with it

I'm part of this group in my English Comp class that has this huge project due at the end of the semester. It's actually part of our final exam. Each member of the group has a specific thing that he or she was to write about.

One member of the group I'm in decided that she needed to drop out of school in the middle of this and not tell anyone, not give us the work she'd done to that point, and not answer the emails that she's been sent. I know this gal's called at least two of her instructors, because I have both of those classes.

Now the three of us that remain have to start her part from scratch, which will put us behind by about three weeks, and i'm not looking forward to doing it. Fortunately, we were able to equally divide the work between us. It's the extra work I don't appreciate, but I guess this gal thought she had no choice but to leave. But geez, at least don't make us do everything from the git go!
=====

There's this one guy in one of my broadcasting classes who thinks that he should be treated special because he's "trying". He argues with the instructor constantly about stupid little things. If he'd just shut the hell up and just do the work that he's been assigned, maybe he might pass the class.

He accused one of my classmates of not having to work as hard because she was awarded a scholarship for getting good grades. She disagreed, saying that she works two jobs AND is also a full time student. She gets good grades because she works hard at it. He's just sloughing off and hopes to get a C, because that's "good enough".

"Good enough" is why I am in college working my ass off for a 4.0 at the age of 43. Because when I was younger, I thought "good enough" was good enough. When I got out into the real world, I got the shock of my life, because I didn't know as much as I thought I did.

And this kid will figure that out when he stops making excuses.

This essay is kicking my ass...

It's not the subject or the writing of it that's giving me fits; it's the footnotes and parentheticals that is driving me up the proverbial wall.

When I write, usually I have a pretty good idea of what I'm writing, that it's all coming out of my imagination or my experience. I haven't written a true essay since high school, and I sure as hell don't remember having to do MLA styling. Footnotes, yes. That's a piece of cake once I remember it, but to cite a source in the body of the essay is something I don't recall ever having to do before.

I've become rather intimate with my text book, The College Writer, and as sure as I sit here, I'll know MLA styling backward, forwards, and as well as I know the various adventures of Dirk Pitt.

(Okay, to be fair, I've had nearly three decades reading Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels. I don't have that long to become one with MLA.)

I have the first draft written, but not yet typed. It will be typed by the time class starts tomorrow. I have a couple more things to do before then.

There are so many things I should be happy about

...but I'm not.

School's okay, in as that I think I am doing well. It's the worry that I'm not doing as well as I think I am.

My financial aid depends on whether I can maintain a certain GPA. I've never been the greatest student that ever graced a college campus, which is probably why I didn't go to any school until two years ago when I decided to go to broadcasting school. I did well there, but Rose State is a whole other animal. Maybe because I'm older and value the educational opportunities more. It bugs me that some of the younger students (ones who are just out of high school) blow off classes like it's no big deal. Perhaps their parents are paying their way, I don't know.

That doesn't mean that it's okay to squander mom and dad's money. Chances are those kids' parents scrimped and saved for years to send their kid to college. I know it would piss me off to know that my kid is doing that (he's not, because he's more of a scrooge than I ever was).

But, I am paying my own way thru school, with the help of financial aid. I intend to finish what I started back in January when I began classes. I am deadly serious about getting a degree. I've put it off long enough (more than twenty years as a matter of fact).

Blowing off my classes is NOT an option. It's tempting sometimes, then I get over it and pile my crap into the car and drive the mile and a half to school everyday. Once I get there, I'm fine.

It's my academic "past" that worries me. Like I said, I'm not the greatest student in the world. But, I am fairly intelligent, and know I can do well. Just took me a couple of decades to realize that though.

Something still nags at me though. I think I know what it is, and I don't think it has anything to do with school.

It might, I don't know.
